TEWKSBURY — Chief Ryan Columbus reports that the Tewksbury Police Department successfully de-escalated an incident in which a woman was wielding a knife outside of a convenience store.
On Friday, March 28, at approximately 6 p.m., Tewksbury Police were called to the area of 1910 Andover St. for a report of a woman who was brandishing a knife.
Officers arrived to find a woman in crisis next door at 1920 Andover St. Officers surrounded that woman and maintained a perimeter while using repeated verbal commands to de-escalate the situation until the woman dropped the knife and surrendered without incident.
There were no reported injuries.
The 34-year-old woman involved was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and to be connected with appropriate services.
“I want to recognize the restraint showed by responding officers, in particular Officer David Aznavoorian, who was first on scene and who maintained his composure and distance while talking the woman into dropping her knife,” said Chief Columbus. “Other officers provided appropriate backup and support, and the incident ended peacefully.”
