The Tewksbury Police Department College Internship / Senior Project Program provides students with an opportunity to gain firsthand experience in municipal law enforcement while learning about the many roles and responsibilities of a modern police department.
The program is designed primarily for college students interested in criminal justice, law enforcement, psychology, social work, or other related fields. The Department may also consider high school senior project opportunities on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature of the project, Department availability, and the student’s school requirements.
College internships are unpaid, non-sworn positions. Scheduling and required hours may vary based on the needs of the student, their college or university, and the availability of the Tewksbury Police Department.
Internship Experience
Our goal is to provide students with a well-rounded experience that goes beyond observing just one area of policing. Depending on scheduling and availability, students may have opportunities to gain experience with or learn about:
- Patrol Operations
- Detective Division
- Community Services and Community Engagement
- Behavioral Health Unit and Department Clinician
- School Resource Officers
- Traffic and Specialized Units
- Police Administration
- Court Operations
- Training and other Department functions
Students may also have opportunities to participate in ride-alongs, community events, training programs, tours, court visits, and other educational experiences throughout their time with the Department.
Interns are encouraged to become active participants in our community engagement efforts. Previous interns have assisted with programs and events such as the Tewksbury Junior Police Academy, Tip-A-Cop, Summer Kickoff, Senior Center programs, and numerous other community events and initiatives.
The specific experiences available to each student will vary based on Department operations, scheduling, and the length of the internship or senior project.

Opportunities are limited and considered based on Department availability. Students interested in completing a college internship or high school senior project with the Tewksbury Police Department are encouraged to apply well in advance of their school’s required start date.
Once an application has been submitted, the Tewksbury Police Department will review the information provided and contact the applicant regarding availability and potential next steps.
